Medellin, Colombia During Covid 19 Frequently Asked Questions

It’s April 1st, 2021, we’ve just wrapped up more than a year of remote work and you desperately need a vacation. The good news is, even though this isn’t over yet, Medellín, Colombia during covid 19 is open for business.

But whether you’re looking to visit for the first time or this is a second trip, there are a few things you need to know. This is why we’ve compiled travelers’ most frequently asked questions.

These questions come up in every one of our phone calls and can help make or break any trip to Medellin. Be sure you read this article before booking flights.

Medellin, Colombia during Covid 19

Places like all-inclusive resorts need tourism to stay open and though Colombia isn’t as popular as the DR or Mexico, the government decided in late November that it was time to open up again.

That’s right, it’s been months since the country has opened up again. Flights are coming in from everywhere and prices range. But as with any location, Medellin, Colombia during COVID 19 has its set of rules.

Here are frequently asked questions for Medellin in 2021.

Is Colombia open for American Travelers?

According to the US Embassy via their website, the Colombian government requires a negative test result upon entering the country. Travelers unable to obtain test results prior to travel, the government can issue testing or isolation.

To make a long story short, you can enter with a negative test, and failure to do so will result in either testing or 10-day isolation. Get tested 3 days before.

Is there a Curfew in Place in Medellin?

This is being handled very poorly and the mayor has randomly implemented 12-hour curfews. We’re currently in the middle of a 4-day 5 pm – 5 am curfew where fines are issued if broken.

This curfew was created because, during Easter, most Colombians have their vacation time and flock to major cities. This Semana Santa (holy week) curfew is from Thursday – Sunday (April 1st – 4th).

No one can say when or if there will be another curfew. This is why I say this is being handled very poorly.

Is Everything Open in Medellin?

Those of you who have visited Medellin know of the best restaurants and even great hole-in-the-wall spots. Covid ushered in an era where the top recognizable restaurants in Parque Lleras were shut down.

Places like ay caramba, al Rojo, basilica, these places no longer exist. Gusto is operating but it was put up for sale. You’ll still find that restaurants like Carmen are operating but one walk through Provenza and you’ll notice new places.

Nightlife in Medellin During Covid 19

We’ve had a handful of bachelor party groups this year that are in awe. Not because of the talent out and about but because it seems like there is no pandemic.

Restaurants and clubs open, people dancing and drinking. Seems like COVID never hit Medellin.

But with 80% occupancy in our intensive care units, doctors are pleading that the government lends them a hand with more restrictions.

The curfews have been a monthly thing so even if you book your flights today, you might be doomed to private bachelor parties at your Airbnb (first-world problems).

Precautions for COVID in Medellin, Colombia

Besides wearing a mask at all times, there are very few restrictions. Some places will take your temperature at the entrance and even soak you in alcohol. Bring a few masks, your own hand sanitizer and you’re good.

Are Medellin strip clubs open?

You knew this question was coming. The answer is yes. Strip clubs such as La Isla Medellin and Fase dos Medellin are open and with fewer tourists.

So if you wish to avoid crowds near the front tables underneath the stage, now is as good a time as any. Strip clubs in Medellin are open until about 2:30 am on most days so visit at around 11 pm to get to see the best roster.

Is Medellin, Colombia during Covid 19 worth visiting?

The way we see it is, Medellin is not a place like Ibiza or places with great nightlife where a good time depends on how packed a club is.

Medellin’s nightlife for instance is great but you’ll likely host private parties which will be the highlight of your trip.

Covid 19 has put a stop to many things but the city still has beautiful women, great restaurants, and a handful of great clubs. If you can do without a packed club and just want to take in the sights during the day with your boys, it’s worth a visit.

If this is your second trip and already did the daytime activities and want to dive headfirst into private parties. Now is the time.

Best Time to Visit Medellin

It’s hard to predict what will happen in the coming months. If vaccines will be mandatory to travel or things will gradually improve. So determining when the best time to visit Medellin will be tough.

But one thing is for certain, we have a long list of reservations for memorial day weekend and are keeping our fingers crossed we can host you as well.
