An Overview of a Girls Trip to Medellin
When you think of Medellin you think of everything except a place for girls to visit on their own. But, you’d be surprised. Here we are in 2021 and the tables have turned.
Colombia is on the map thanks to many Wall Street Journal articles. Not to mention Anthony Bourdain visits and dozens of accolades cities like Medellin, and Cartagena has won in the last 5 years.
What does this mean for female travelers? Allow us to show you.
Girls Trips to Medellin
About 50% of our clients are males looking to engage in adventure tours during the day and nightlife excursions. But once in a blue moon, we happen to come across a group of young American women looking to see the real Medellin.
This real Medellin is the combination of its people living their day to day. Our culinary scene, cultural tours and the city’s quality of life.
East to West RMS & Co.
Last week we hosted 3 young ladies from New York City. An avid traveler and two of her college friends that had never been to South America. Needless to say, there were some safety concerns.
The group wanted to jam in almost a dozen locations in one and a half-day. Something unheard of at the time. Here was the tentative schedule:
- Tuesday – Guatape Excursion complete with the climbing of the rock. This was followed by a tour of the town and a boat ride down the lake to Pablo Escobar’s estate.
- Wednesday – Pablo Escobar Tour, Comuna 13 Tour, City Tour
All these locations are a day on their own so many had to be cut short to complete.
Guatape was a walk in the park. As the beautiful scenery driving in makes even the most finicky traveler excited about what’s to come.
From the climbing of the rock to the 30-minute tour of the villa Escobar built for his daughter. The town enchanted the two that didn’t know what to expect while the third analyzed and took pictures.
Wednesday Itinerary
Wednesday the first part of the day was spent visiting two of the city’s most impoverished neighborhoods. Places where government-funded social projects have helped the youth stay out off the streets and where gondola lifts that allow these people to commute daily have allured thousands of visitors to see the Medellin locals see.
The next part of the day was just as interesting and as much as locals will hate us for perpetuating the Pablo Escobar story, it is important for people to know the truth. That the Medellin you thought you knew before visiting, is long gone.
We visited the infamous Monaco building that was bombed in 1985 by Escobar’s enemies while he was inside with his family, the cemetery where he and Griselda Blanco (the white widow) are buried, and saw the influence he had in building what we now know as El Poblado.
Rachel, Rebecca, and Amy all had mixed feelings towards visiting neighborhoods with some pretty big scars but coming to Medellin and not riding the metro cable or visiting Comuna 13 would have been a mistake.
Conclusion
Our job for the week was to be the face of the city and the people responsible for creating an experience this group of young professionals won’t soon forget.
So whether it’s a girl’s trip or a guy’s trip, Medellin has something for everyone, and coming here will have you leaving with a whole new interpretation of life outside of the home.
